Suspense and romance never cease to make a formidable combination. Add in a criminal mind, an assiduous investigation and lots of action and you’ve got an excellent story. S. Matthews has created all this in “Fire Angel” with her modern, sharp, straight-to-the point style of writing.
The dynamics of the story shifts between two main segments. One is constituted by the investigation to find the arsonist who terrorizes Paradise, where it becomes obvious that the author has done her homework and some serious research about the criminal mind, motivations and about procedural and technical details regarding arson.
The second and main segment of the tale is the love story between Jake and Alexis, which is gradually developing as the history of the characters becomes clear. A load of unfinished business simmers between them and the fact that they’re not flawless – each having emotional or physical traumas – makes them more human and believable. Their common cause helps bring them closer and deepens their feelings for each other.
Things, descriptions, characters features and history are suggested bit by bit rather than revealed all at once. That, along with suspense and a curious tension keeps us glued to the book and has us speculating on several levels.
Whether or not your speculations will prove to be correct, “Fire Angel” is more than a good read, it’s also a lesson to be learned…

Since I don’t want to give up any spoilers and this book is loaded with twists – beginning with a very symbolic title, I will start by saying the writing style is nearly flawless, revealing an interesting plot, written in an alert rhythm. As in “Fire Angel” - S. Matthews’ previous book - character development is impressive and she smartly creates a cameo for Jake and Alexis - the hero and heroine of “Fire Angel” .
Unlike the superficial Barbie and Ken perfect prototype duo, Misty Starr and Nick Anthony are credible characters, with very human flaws and traumas, both physical and psychological. By using this technique, the author makes them believable, almost real and the reader sympathizes with them.
Caught in the action - methodical and logical, with impeccable descriptions, I could actually see every scene with my mind’s eyes, almost like watching a movie.
“In Plain Sight” is a delightful read and S. Matthews didn’t disappoint me, but made me look forward to her future works!

Someone told me this is one of Susanne Matthews’ best books and, after reading it, I totally agree. The story between Cleopatra and Sam develops between the backgrounds of Las Vegas’ night life and the splendid landscapes of the Mojave Desert. Everything is beautifully described and Mrs. Matthews’ graphic writing style makes the story play in our minds vividly like a movie, from the fantastic scenery to the passionate steamy love scenes. The writing flows smoothly and the unexpected twists skillfully sprinkled throughout the story keep the reader glued to this book.
Personally, I liked all this author’s works, but this one has climbed instantly to my Top Three! Great job, as always!

S. Matthews’ first attempt at historical romance is a wonderful treat for all romance lovers. The story of Etienne and Danielle starts in seventeenth century France, with well-researched historical and political settings that artfully propel the reader into that era. The plot and all the additional adventures of the hero and heroine remind me of Balzac’s masterful writing, combined with some steamy but tasteful eroticism. The action is well-paced, with twists that keep the reader glued to the story, living each moment of passion, frustration, panic or desperate love. Every detail, every name is chosen carefully by the author to fit like puzzle pieces, giving us a glimpse of that long lost time, dominated by drama and intrigue, when a promise valued more than a man’s honor.
As all S. Matthews’ work, The Captain’s Promise is definitely a page-turner and similar to watching a great historical movie!

Second chance love takes on a new dimension in the latest novel by author Susanne Matthews, where she weaves a story about reincarnation and long lasting love. Michelle and Tony dream of each other even before they meet in person, and that’s because their souls have mated more than two centuries ago. Now fate has deemed fit to bring them together again, but things are not as simple as they seem. They are both involved in a complicated murder investigation, which puts not only them in danger.
The story is fast-paced and has a good plot, well-developed and well-researched, with just the right amount of technical details to make it plausible, but keep it from being boring. And even though I would have liked more suspense, I would say it’s perfectly balanced. From all this author’s work, this book is my favorite so far!

On His Watch is a suspenseful thriller with a romantic twist. The plot is not complex, but highly entertaining.
With books of fiction, I like well-developed characters involved in rich story-lines that stay with me after I've gone to bed. This book certainly fills that bill.
The characters are developed not so much that you can visualize them physically, but you can really understand them emotionally. The two main characters are realistic and believable. Our hero and protector cannot leap tall buildings in a single bound, but is definitely skilled at what he does. He’s an imperfect man with emotions and a big heart who gets the job done. Our victim’s trauma is uniquely captured and this lovely lady’s inner strength reads true. Is there romantic involvement between protector and victim? You’ll see. All the supporting characters are purposefully introduced without superfluous characters to confuse the reader.
The pace of the story is set with the situation, on several occasions at a break-neck pace. The book is well researched. A distant villain with a plocomelia abnormality; nice touch. Look it up, I had to.
I recommend “On His Watch” as a thoroughly entertaining easy read.

This latest book by S. Matthews seems to me one of her biggest and most challenging projects so far. The plotline is artistically woven, and the characters well-rounded and believable.
Nikki Hart is the victim of a brutal attack, during which two of her children are killed and she is severely injured. Only after weeks of her being in a coma do the doctors realize that she has lost her memory.
Jason is the man who saved her, and even before she meets him, she thinks of him as her guardian angel.
As she heals and the puzzle pieces of her memory gradually get back into place, the friendship between them blooms into something much more meaningful, on the background of the investigation to find the person who changed their lives forever.
A well-crafted story, with great visuals and realistic characters. Bravo, Mrs. Matthews!

Though historical romance is not usually my favorite genre, I found myself captured by this story, which I thoroughly enjoyed. S. Matthews creates strong characters, to which I could relate immediately, and to which I want to return, again and again.
Isabelle is bold and daring, determined to take her fate in her own hands and clear her late husband’s reputation, as well as exposing the lies and intrigues of the Court.
Guy is a perfect match for her and doesn’t hesitate for a second to try to help and shield her from all harm. Together they face fatal danger, fierce adventures and burning passion, on the historical background of the seventeenth-century New France.
All in wall, this was another of Susanne Matthews’ delightful journeys, which I hope will soon be followed by a sequel.

The story of Georgia and Mark begins in a pre-Christmas Philadelphia, among lovely decorations and artfully described settings, which make the feeling of magic even more potent. A story full of twists and turns, a story about love and chemistry, forgiveness and second chances, all wrapped up in the red bow of passion. A wonderful read for any time of the year, but especially worth savouring in a cozy winter night, along with a mug of hot cocoa…

I loved the idea of compiling all these great short stories, along with finger-licking recipes, which make a perfect Valentine’s Day. I liked all the stories very much, and my favorite was ‘There’s Always Tomorrow’ by Susanne Matthews. I especially adored this one because the author manages to create strong, real characters even in less than twenty pages, a skill not many authors possess. I immediately felt a connection with Iris and Finn, and the chemistry between them was absolutely magic. Nothing more fit for Valentine’s Day than a handful of great romance stories!
As for the recipes, they all sound delicious, especially the desserts. Mya O’Malley’s Chocolate Martini is number one on my list, along with her cookies. All in all, this is not only a great read, but a masterpiece where talented authors join forces and aprons. Highly recommended!

know I say this every time I pick up a book by this author, but this is definitely Susanne Matthews’ best book and has all the features of a bestseller. Fast paced, well rounded, with a perfectly polished plot, Faye’s and Rob’s story kept my heartbeats pumping and my brain alert. Being an author myself, I couldn’t help admiring S. Rob and Faye have a romantic history and almost got married, but their relationship has been estranged for over a year.

Rob is a detective who loves his job, proud of his reputation and very assured in his effectiveness. Faye is a talented investigative journalist whose reputation has been tarnished and blames Rob for her current predicament. Faye is fiercely independent (independent to a fault) and is now trying to claw herself back to the top her game. When Faye is attacked, however, the first person she calls is Rob.

The White Carnation is an entertaining suspenseful thriller with a sick, but meticulous villain obsessed with Faye and with a twisted mission.

Just when the reader believes that Rob and his team are on track to capture Faye’s attacker a new twist unfolds like a sharp bend in the road taking the story to a deeper more complex level with the villain attracting a cult-like following even someone close to Rob. Rob sometimes works together with Faye using her investigative instinct and research skills, but sometimes Faye is… just not there.

I recommend “The White Carnation” as a thoroughly entertaining read. However, I found that story came to a close too early with the reader assured that Faye was now safe and that most of those responsible eliminated or held accountable, but with some critical strings left dangling. Will the story-line continue? We’ll see.

Indie Publishing - How Can I Lose?

Being a published author has always been a dream, but one I've realized is fraught with heartache and disappointment as well as joy and excitement. I've become a hybrid author-like the cars-two publishing options blended together. While I still have established publishers, I've chosen to publish some of my work myself.

The publishing industry has changed over the past twenty years. With the astounding leaps in technology, the advent of Kindles, Kobos, Nooks, and tablets has created a whole new and extremely convenient way to read. More and more books are being published as e-books, and for the first time in the history of publishing, authors have choices and can control the fate of their writing. Good or bad? Time will tell.

Learning to format the book, knowing any errors in it were my responsibility, was a daunting task, one which almost brought me to my knees more than once, but I persevered. In indie publishing, a book thrives or dies on the author's efforts alone, but as an indie publisher all the rights to my books are mine. In essence, M. H. Susanne Matthews became a microscopic publishing house. With the help of my good friend Melinda De Ross and Classy Designs, I began releasing those orphan books. I control their fate and the fate of any others I chose to publish this way-their edits, their formats, their distribution, their marketing, in short, everything is on my shoulders.
